Ohio Wind Storms

As a result of September 14, 2008 wind storms, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland declared a state of emergency Monday during his 1:30 p.m. press conference.

88 counties have reported damage or power outages; more than 1.9 million customers were without power in Ohio.

What to do now.....

The Ohio Department of Insurance recommends taking these steps if your property has been damaged:

  • Call your insurance company as soon as you can. Be sure your agent knows how to contact you.
  • Take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage, if public-safety authorities will allow it and if you will not endanger yourself. Call you local utility to report any down power lines. Do not attempt to move power lines that might have fallen on your property.
  • Inspect your property and cars for damage. Note and photograph any damage.
  • Check your policy for "loss of use" coverage, should you need temporary housing.
  • Be sure everything is considered when you make a claim. Back up claims with written estimates.
  • The Insurance Department's online Severe Weather Toolkit, available at www.ohioinsurance.gov, provides guidance on what steps to take when filing an insurance claim.

Insurance consumers with questions may call us or contact the department's hot line at 1-800-686-1526.
